Hit exact KB targets for govt portals — 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB

Passport Seva needs the photo under 100 KB. PAN card portal wants it under 50 KB. Voter ID under 20 KB. Most upload forms reject anything over 200 KB. We use a binary-search JPEG quality algorithm to land on your exact target byte budget — the tool starts at quality 95, halves it if too big, doubles back if too small, and converges in 5-7 iterations. That's why our compressed images look noticeably sharper than dumb fixed-quality compressors. For images that still won't compress small enough at acceptable quality (typically very large source photos), we also downscale the pixel dimensions intelligently — keeping at least 600 pixels on the long edge so the photo doesn't blur.

JPEG vs PNG vs WEBP — which to pick

JPEG: best for photographs, faces, landscapes. Lossy but very small. Use this for passport/PAN/voter photos. PNG: lossless, best for line art, signatures, screenshots with text. Larger file size. Use only when the source is truly graphic. WEBP: modern format with 25-40% smaller files than JPEG at the same visual quality. Excellent for websites; not yet accepted by most Indian government portals. AVIF: even smaller than WEBP. Web-only, not portal-friendly yet. Our compressor defaults to JPEG with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling and progressive encoding — the same combination used by news websites that need fast-loading images at minimal byte cost.

  • Why does my image look blurry after compression?

    Either your KB target is too aggressive for the source dimensions, or the source itself was already low-quality. Try a slightly higher KB target, or downscale dimensions before compression.

  • Can I batch-compress multiple files?

    Currently one file at a time. Batch processing is on our roadmap — drop us a request via the Contact form to vote for it.

  • Does compression hurt OCR / face-detection?

    At ≥50 KB on a 600×800 image, OCR and face recognition remain reliable. Below that quality begins to degrade — we warn you if you go aggressive.
